Bhikkhunī Vuṭṭhāpana

Bhikkhunī Vuṭṭhāpana Bodhinyana Monastery 22nd October 2009
Prior to the ordination the bhikkhunī Sangha must agree on the preceptor (cf. bhikkhunī pācittiya 75). This is done through the following procedure.

A bhikkhunī who has completed twelve rains bows to the bhikkhunī Sangha (except if she is the most senior bhikkhunī) and then says:

‘Ahaṃ, ayye, Tathāālokā paripuṇṇadvādasavassā bhikkhunī saṃghaṃ vuṭṭhāpanasammutiṃ yācāmi. Dutiyampi, ayye, ahaṃ Tathāālokā paripuṇṇadvādasavassā bhikkhunī saṃghaṃ vuṭṭhāpanasammutiṃ yācāmi. Tatiyampi, ayye, ahaṃ Tathāālokā paripuṇṇadvādasavassā bhikkhunī saṃghaṃ vuṭṭhāpanasammutiṃ yācāmi'.

If the Sangha agrees that she is suitable as a pavattinī, then a knowledgeable and capable bhikkhunī should recite the kammavācā to authorise her as a pavattinī:

‘Suṇātu me, ayye, saṃgho. Ayaṃ Tathāālokā paripuṇṇadvādasavassā bhikkhunī saṃghaṃ vuṭṭhāpanasammutiṃ yācati. Yadi saṃghassa pattakallaṃ, saṃgho Tathāālokāya paripuṇṇadvādasavassāya bhikkhuniyā vuṭṭhāpanasammutiṃ dadeyya. Esā ñatti.

Suṇātu me, ayye, saṃgho. Ayaṃ Tathāālokā paripuṇṇadvādasavassā bhikkhunī saṃghaṃ vuṭṭhāpanasammutiṃ yācati. Saṃgho Tathāālokāya paripuṇṇadvādasavassāya bhikkhuniyā vuṭṭhāpanasammutiṃ deti. Yassā ayyāya khamati Tathāālokāya paripuṇṇadvādasavassāya bhikkhuniyā vuṭṭhāpanasammutiyā dānaṃ, sā tuṇhassa; yassā nakkhamati, sā bhāseyya.

Dinnā saṃghena Tathāālokāya paripuṇṇadvādasavassāya bhikkhuniyā vuṭṭhāpanasammuti. Khamati saṃghassa, tasmā tuṇhī, evametaṃ dhārayāmī’.

At this point Tathāālokā bhikkhunī will have been given the ordination-authorisation (vuṭṭhāpanasammutiṃ). The ordination can then proceed.

Sāmaṇerīs walk in carrying tray and stop about 3 metres from pavattinī. While standing they ask for forgiveness:

Go and stand over there.

Saddhivihārinīs back up, then turn to the right and go to an appointed place outside the Sangha. Kammavācācarinīs bow thrice, kneel and say:

Homage to the Blessed, the Worthy, the Fully Awakened Buddha!

If the Sangha is ready, I will instruct Vāyāmā and Nirodhā (Serī and Hassapaññā).

Kammavācācarinīs join the saddhivihārinīs, standing in the appointed place for the instruction. They are then instructed and examined individually:

My name is Vāyāmā (Nirodhā/Serī/Hassapaññā).

Kānāmā te pavattinī?

What is your preceptor’s name?

Pavattinī me, ayye,

ayyā Tathāālokā nāma.

My preceptor’s name is

Venerable Tathāālokā.

Kammavācācarinīs return to the Sangha, bow once and say:

Suṇātu me, ayye, saṅgho. Vāyāmā ca    Nirodhā ca (Serī ca Hassapaññā ca) Tathāālokāya ayyāya upasampadāpekkhāyo. Anusiṭṭhā tā mayā. Yadi saṅghassa pattakallaṃ, Vāyāmā ca Nirodhā ca (Serī ca Hassapaññā ca) āgaccheyyuṃ.

May the Sangha listen to me, Venerable Ladies. Vāyāmā and    Nirodhā (Serī and Hassapaññā) are seeking ordination from Venerable Tathāālokā. They have been instructed by me. If the Sangha is ready, let Vāyāmā and Nirodhā  (Serī and Hassapaññā)  come here.

Āgacchatha.

Come!

The saddhivihārinīs approach the Sangha, the final few metres on the knees, then bow three times. Kneeling they request the upasampadā:

Ekaṃsaṃ uttarāsaga kārāpetvā bhikkhunīna pāde vandāpetvā ukkuika nisīdāpetvā añjaliṃ paggaṇhāpetvā upasampada yācāpetabbā

Saṅghaṃ, ayye, upasampadaṃ yācāma.

Ullumpatu no, ayye, saṅgho anukampaṃ upādāya.

Dutiyampi, ayye, saṅghaṃ upasampadaṃ yācāma. Ullumpatu no, ayye, saṅgho anukampaṃ upādāya.

Venerable Ladies, we request ordination from the Sangha. May the Sangha raise us up out of compassion.

A second time, Venerable Ladies, we request ordination from the Sangha. May the Sangha raise us up out of compassion. A third time, Venerable Ladies, we request ordination from the Sangha. May the Sangha raise us up out of compassion.

They bow three times and remain kneeling. The pavattinī informs the Sangha that the saddhivihārinīs are her candidates and requests the Sangha to give them upasampadā:

idāni kho ayye ayañca Vāyāmā  ayañca    Nirodhā  (ayañca Serī ayañca Hassapaññā ) nāma sāmaṇeriyo upasampadāpekkhāyo.

Upasampadaṃ ākaṅkhamānā saṅghaṃ yācanti. Ahaṃ sabbam’imaṃ saṅghaṃ ajjhesāmi:

kamma-sanniṭṭhānaṃ karotu.

Now Ladies, these novices named Vāyāmā and Nirodhā (Serī and Hassapaññā) seek ordination. Desiring ordination, they request it from the Sangha. I propose all this to the Sangha. It would be well, Ladies, if, when all the Sangha has questioned these novices named Vāyāmā and Nirodhā (Serī and Hassapaññā) about the obstructing factors, and has acknowledged its readiness, we give ordination by the ‘Act with the Motion as Fourth’ which is unshakeable, fit to stand, and brings the Act to a conclusion.

Kammavācācarinīs appoint themselves to question the saddhivihārinīs in the midst of the Sangha:

Suṇātu me, ayye, saṅgho.

Ayañca Vāyāmā  ayañca Nirodhā  (ayañca Serī ayañca Hassapaññā ) Tathāālokāya ayyāya upasampadāpekkhāyo. Yadi saṅghassa pattakallaṃ, ahaṃ Vāyāmaṃ  ca Nirodhaṃ ca ( Seriṃ ca Hassapaññaṃ ca) antarāyike dhamme puccheyyaṃ.

May the Sangha listen, Venerable Ladies. Vāyāmā and Nirodhā  (Serī and Hassapaññā)  seek ordination with Venerable Tathāālokā. If the Sangha is ready, I will question Vāyāmā and Nirodhā (Serī and Hassapaññā)  about the obstructing factors.

Kammavācācarinīs question the saddhivihārinīs:

Suṇasi Vāyāme.(Nirodhe/Seri/Hassapaññe). Ayaṃ te saccakālo, bhūtakālo. Yaṃ jātaṃ taṃ pucchāmi. Santaṃ atthīti vattabbaṃ, asantaṃ natthīti vattabbaṃ.

Na'si animittā?

Listen, Vāyāmā (Nirodhā /Serī/ Hassapaññā). This is your time of truth, the time of facts. I will ask you about what has happened. If it is true, say ‘yes’. If it is not true, say ‘no’.

Kammavācācarinīs now chant the  motion and three announcements to the Sangha. This is the formal proclamation that constitutes the actual ordination: Byattāya bhikkhuniyā paibalāya sagho ñāpetabbo:

Suṇātu me, ayye, saṅgho. Ayañca Vāyāmā  ayañca Nirodhā  (ayañca Serī ayañca Hassapaññā ) Tathāālokāya  ayyāya upasampadāpekkhāyo. Parisuddhā antarāyikehi dhammehi, paripuṇṇamimāsaṃ pattacīvaraṃ. May the Sangha listen, Venerable Ladies. Vāyāmā and Nirodhā (Serī and Hassapaññā )  seek ordination with Venerable Tathāālokā.

They are purified from the obstructing factors, and their bowls and robes are complete.

Vāyāmā and Nirodhā (Serī and Hassapaññā ) ask the Sangha for ordination, with Venerable Tathāālokā as preceptor.

If the Sangha is ready, the Sangha may ordain Vāyāmā and Nirodhā (Serī and Hassapaññā), with Venerable Tathāālokā as preceptor.

Whoever does not accept it, may they speak.

Dutiyampi etamatthaṃ vadāmi—

For the second time I speak on this matter. May the Sangha listen, Venerable Ladies. Vāyāmā and Nirodhā (Serī and Hassapaññā ) seek ordination with Venerable Tathāālokā. They are purified from the obstructing factors, and their bowls and robes are complete. Vāyāmā and Nirodhā (Serī and Hassapaññā) ask the Sangha for ordination, with Venerable Tathāālokā as preceptor.

The Sangha ordains Vāyāmā and Nirodhā (Serī and Hassapaññā), with Venerable Tathāālokā as preceptor. Whichever Venerable accepts the ordination of Vāyāmā and Nirodhā (Serī and Hassapaññā), with Venerable Tathāālokā as preceptor, let them be silent.

Whoever does not accept it, may they speak.

Tatiyampi etamatthaṃ vadāmi—

Suṇātu me, ayye, saṅgho. Ayañca Vāyāmā  ayañca Nirodhā (ayañca Serī  ayañca Hassapaññā) Tathāālokāya  ayyāya upasampadāpekkhāyo. Parisuddhā antarāyikehi dhammehi, paripuṇṇamimāsaṃ pattacīvaraṃ. For the third time I speak on this matter.

Upasampannāyo saṅghena Vāyāmā  ca Nirodhā  ca (Serī ca Hassapaññā  ca) Tathāālokāya ayyāya pavattiniyā. Khamati saṅghassa, tasmā tuṇhī, evametaṃ dhārayāmi.

Vāyāmā and Nirodhā (Serī and Hassapaññā) are ordained by the Sangha, with Venerable Tathāālokā as preceptor. The Sangha accepts this, so it is silent. Thus I remember it.

The saddhivihārinīs now go to the bhikkhusaṅgha to receive the second part of the ordination. They bow to the bhikkhusaṅgha, remain on their knees and then recite:

Tāvadeva  ādāya bhikkhusagha upasakamitvā ekasa uttarāsaga kārāpetvā bhikkhūna pāde vandāpetvā ukkuika nisīdāpetvā añjaliṃ paggaṇhāpetvā upasampada yācāpetabbā:

A learned bhikkhu should make known to the Sangha:

Byattena bhikkhunā paibalena sagho ñāpetabbo:

Suṇātu me, bhante, saṅgho. Ayañca Vāyāmā  ayañca Nirodhā (ayañca Serī  ayañca Hassapaññā ) Tathāālokāya  upasampadāpekkhāyo, ekatoupasampannāyo bhikkhunisaṅghe, visuddhā. Vāyāmā  ca Nirodhā  ca (Serī ca Hassapaññā  ca) saṅghaṃ upasampadaṃ yācanti Tathāālokāya pavattiniyā. Yadi saṅghassa pattakallaṃ, saṅgho Vāyāmaṃ  ca Nirodhaṃ ca (Seriṃ ca Hassapaññaṃ ca) upasampādeyya, Tathāālokāya  pavattiniyā. Esā ñatti.

The ordination is now fulfilled.

Tāvadeva chāyā metabbā, utuppamāṇa ācikkhitabba, divasabhāgo ācikkhitabbo, sagīti ācikkhitabbā, bhikkhuniyo vattabbā : imissā tayo ca nissaye, aṭṭha ca akaraṇīyāni ācikkheyyātha.

Right then the shadow should be measured, the date should be announced, the time of day should be announced, the chanting should be announced, the three requisites should be announced, the eight things never to be done should be announced.

Explanation of the three requisites:

Piṇḍiyālopabhojanaṃ nissāya pabbajjā. Tattha vo yāvajīvaṃ ussāho karaṇīyo. Atirekalābho - saṅghabhattaṃ, uddesabhattaṃ, nimantanaṃ, salākabhattaṃ, pakkhikaṃ, uposathikaṃ, pāṭipadikaṃ.

Going-Forth has alms-food as its support. For the rest of your life you are to endeavor at that. The extra allowances are: a meal for the Sangha,  for specific bhikkhunīs, for invited bhikkhunīs, by tickets, given fornightly, Uposatha day, the day after Uposatha.

Āma, ayye.

Yes, ayye.

Paṃsukūlacīvaraṃ nissāya pabbajjā. Tattha vo yāvajīvaṃ ussāho karaṇīyo. Atirekalābho -- khomaṃ, kappāsikaṃ, koseyyaṃ, kambalaṃ, sāṇaṃ, bhaṅgaṃ.

Going-Forth has rag-robes as its support. For the rest of your life you are to endeavor at that. The extra allowances are: (robes made of) linen, cotton, silk, wool, hemp, (or) a mixture of these.

Āma, ayye.

Yes, ayye.

Pūtimuttabhesajjaṃ nissāya pabbajjā. Tattha vo yāvajīvaṃ ussāho karaṇīyo. Atirekalābho - sappi, navanītaṃ, telaṃ, madhu, phāṇitaṃ.

Going-Forth has medicinal fermented urine as its support. For the rest of your life you are to endeavor at that. The extra allowances are: ghee, fresh butter, oil, honey, sugar.

Āma, ayye.

Yes, ayye.

The eight things never to be done are to be explained. These are the eight pārājika offences for bhikkhunīs:

Upasampannāya bhikkhuniyā aṭṭha-pārājika-dhammā na atikkamaniyā. Yā bhikkhunī pārājikadhammaṃ atikkamati assamaṇī hoti asakyadhītā. Te vo yāvajīvaṃ akaraṇīyāni.

Exhortation on the Threefold Training:

Anekapariyāyena kho pana tena bhagavatā jānatā passatā arahatā sammāsambuddhena sīlaṃ sammadakkhātaṃ, samādhi sammadakkhātaṃ, paññā sammadakkhātaṃ, yāvadeva tassa māda-nimmadanassa, pipāsa-viniyassa, ālaya-samugghātassa, vaṭṭūpacchedassa, taṇhakkhayassa, virāgassa, nirodhassa, nibbānassa sacchikiriyāya.

In many ways the One who Knows, the One who Sees, the Arahant, the Fully Awakened Buddha has well expounded ethics, concentration, and understanding, only for the eradication of pride, the dispelling of thirst, the destruction of reliance, the severing of the round, the ending of craving, fading away, cessation, and the witnessing of Nibbana.

Tattha sīlaparibhāvito samādhi mahapphalo hoti mahānisaṃso. Samādhiparibhāvitā paññā mahapphalā hoti mahānisaṃsā. Paññāparibhāvitaṃ cittaṃ sammadeva āsavehi vimuccati, seyyathidaṃ - kāmāsavā, bhavāsavā, avijjāsavā.

Here, samadhi imbued with ethics is of great fruit and benefit. Understanding imbued with samadhi is of great fruit and benefit. The mind imbued with understanding is rightly freed from the defilements, that is, the defilements of sensuality, existence, and ignorance.

Tasmātiha vo imasmiṃ tathāgatappavedite dhammavinaye sakkaccaṃ adhisīlasikkhā sikkhitabbā adhicittasikkhā sikkhitabbā adhipaññāsikkhā sikkhitabbā. Tattha appamādena sampadetabbaṃ.

Therefore, in this Dhamma-Vinaya made known by the Tathagata you should scrupulously train in the higher ethics, higher mind, and higher understanding. In these you should strive with heedfulness.

Āma, ayye.

Yes, ayye.

The ceremony concludes with a blessing from the sangha.
